Slipknot guitarist Jim Root’s Charvel signature San Dimas Style 1 HH FR E is a return to his beginnings decades in the making.

Typically known for playing a Stratocaster, Telecaster or Jazzmaster on stage with the Iowa metal legends, Root was actually inspired by a red Charvel Model 1 he found at a local music retailer. At that time, Root was entering his teenage years, metal was running wild, and bright, bombastic guitars were flooding pop culture.

“By the time I learned about the whole Charvel thing, it was the MTV generation, and I remember seeing Warren DeMartini’s guitars, and I was mesmerized by them,” he said.

“The sounds were incredible. Being that age and not having a lot of money, I never thought I could afford one of these guitars. But it was also a goal to reach.”

That was just the start. Since then, Root has established himself as one of the foremost metal guitarists in the world, playing for the biggest metal bands in the world. While he and his bandmates operate under masks, there’s no mistaking Root’s style — from his devastating riffs to his minimalist take on his black and white namesake instruments.

To introduce Root back into the Charvel family, he kept it simple, but totally true to his core.

“It’s cool going back to these guitars after really not owning one since my teens,” Root said. “It’s making me remember things that I haven’t done since then. It’s definitely inspiring in a nostalgic kind of way.”

One version features a Satin White finish with an ebony fingerboard that follows many of the models he’s played in the past. Another is decked out in Satin Black with a maple neck that he’s recently come to love again — a tribute to his first Charvel.

And in a big change, Root’s new signature models boast a Floyd Rose 1500 Series Double-Locking Tremolo Bridge System, giving him even more tonal flexibility. Paired with his signature EMG Daemonium humbucking pickups, these guitars are ready to command any stage.

“Everything about it is just made for playability and ease of use,” he said. “Things that I’ve thought about as a touring live player and a studio player. Bringing all those aspects together in a guitar is what I was trying to achieve.”
